Backflow testing FAQs

Questions about backflow testing

Questions Cerrillos, NM property owners ask about backflow testing and backflow prevention.

Talk to a person
Who is allowed to test my backflow device?
A tester who holds a backflow tester certification recognized by your state or your water utility. Many utilities keep an approved tester list and reject reports signed by anyone not on it.
Why is water dripping from my RPZ relief valve?
A steady drip usually means debris is holding the first check open or the relief valve diaphragm is worn. A cleaning or a rebuild kit fixes most cases.
Can a backflow preventer freeze?
Yes. Trapped water expands and can crack the bronze body or blow out the bonnet. Insulated enclosures, heat cable or draining the device for winter prevent it.
Who sends the test report to the water utility?
The tester usually files it, either on the utility's paper form or through its online portal. Ask for a copy for your own records.
Can a backflow preventer be repaired instead of replaced?
Often it can. Rebuild kits with new discs, springs and seals are sold for most brands. Replacement makes more sense when the body is cracked or parts are no longer made.
